Wear layer

Luxury vinyl plank brands imitate popular domestic wood species like oak, maple, and exotic wood species. The wear layer, which covers the image layer, determines durability. Once this transparent surface layer becomes worn, the flooring must be replaced. If you choose a brand with a wear layer of at least 20-mils thick, your new floor can last 25 years or more, with proper care. Some companies put a polyurethane coating or similar substance on the wear layer for increased durability.

Core layer

LVP that repels water has a wood plastic composite (WPC) core. This type of waterproof flooring stands up well to pet accidents and spills. There's no scrubbing involved; wipe up with a cloth or mop and mild liquid floor cleaner. Even standing water does not damage the floor. LVP that includes a stone plastic composite (SPC) core is also waterproof. Typically, this virtually-indestructible flooring is used for commercial applications, but it's appropriate for residential applications, too.
